Abstract
How do societies conceive time ? What is the role of temporality in the social organization of activities and relations among individuals and public organizations in economic and social projects that deal with the future of a society ? In this presentation, Gonzalo Iparraguirre, anthropologist at Faculty of Philosophy and Literature, University of Buenos Aires, illustrates the results of his ethnographic study combining over fifteen years of fieldwork in the public sector management of development programs in Argentina, Latin America and the Global South. Introducing cultural rhythmics as a new method to study temporality, spatiality, and timing of daily life simultaneously rather than as separate elements, Dr. Iparraguirre deploys alternative proposals for political and scientific management of the practices of development and agendas design in Latin America, calling attention to cultural imaginaries and the social perception of future.

Dr. Gonzalo Iparraguirre will give a public talk at the Department of Sociology and Social Research in occasion of the kick-off week of the ECIU/SOI Challenge “Hitchhikers’ guides, virtual Charons, and the future of cultural objects”.

Dr. Gonzalo Iparraguirre is a researcher at Institute of Anthropological Sciences, Faculty of Philosophy and Literature, University of Buenos Aires. He completed his licentiate in anthropology in 2011 at University of Buenos Aires and his doctorate at the same University in 2015. Since 2008 he works with a team of physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists in the development of an interdisciplinary program in CEITT (Research Center for Time and Temporality). Its main purpose is to achieve simultaneous studies on social and philosophical studies of time (temporality) and physical and computational studies (time) that can be applied to other research groups interested. His main research theme is focused to the comparative cross-cultural study of different temporalities, rhythms of life and social dynamics. He recently published a book for Emerald Publishing (2022), ‘Cultural Rhythmics. Applied Anthropology and Global Development from Latin America’ exploring the implementation of anthropological methodologies to innovation processes of social and technological development in Latin America.
