On Monday May 8th, from 12:00 to 13:30 (Central European Time), Dr. Schmidt-Lauff will give a presentation titled « Biographical Temporalization(s) : A Time-Sensitive Reconstruction for Adult Education ».

The (post)modern idea that the nature of time is socio-culturally influenced, and at the same time, that the individual responsibility to handle or manage time properly is overemphasized, creates a Zeitgeist (spirit of the time) from which biographies could have emerged in the first place. If a biography is understood « as a time-specific form of the description of an individual’s life » (Kade & Hof 2010, p.146), a time-sensitive reconstruction – for instance in biographical education research – can reveal collective and individual-subjective forms of temporal (re)ordering of a person’s life. This relates to specific use of life history, life-course, or narrations, as (auto)biographical constructs of lived times, and the capacity for biographicity (Alheit, 2020). Central questions are : how do people (re)construct their identity temporally throughout the context of lifelong learning ? How is time echoed in or through learning ? Based on narrations from interviews with participants in adult education courses, biographical temporalization(s) as narrated time, temporal indexicality, and relational figurations of past, present, and future in biographical time will be discussed. The presentation will be made in English, with live transcripts, and it will be followed by a discussion with the audience.
